In order for your smile to maintain its optimal strength, you need a sufficient amount of bone tissue. This is not only necessary for the integrity of your smile but may also be needed for certain dental restorations. If you would like to meet with us to see if this treatment is right for you, call Rosedale Dental Studio at 661-501-4746. A member of our team can plan your visit with our dentist, Dr. Nicole Chen.

Why Would I Need a Bone Graft?
The most common reason for a bone graft is to prepare you for a dental implant. When a tooth and its root have been lost, the jawbone in that area will begin to deteriorate or resorb without the pressure exerted on it during biting and chewing. A bone graft may be needed to accommodate the implant. A bone graft may also be beneficial to the health of your smile if you have lost tissue due to advanced gum disease.
What Are the Types of Bone Grafts?
There are two kinds of bone grafts. The first is a normal graft that is typically used to restore lost tissue to the lower jaw. The second is known as a sinus lift. A sinus lift is used for patients who are planning on having dental implants placed in the upper jaw. Dr. Nicole Chen will give you a thorough examination, which will include a full series of X-rays, to determine if a graft is needed and which type will benefit you.

What Is Involved in the Process?
During a normal bone graft, we will first administer an anesthetic to keep you comfortable. Dr. Nicole Chen will make an incision in your gums to access the area to be treated and place the grafting material. The area will be closed with sutures and allowed to heal. Ideally, a piece of bone taken from another part of your jaw or body will be used, however we can also use artificial material or bone from a tissue bank.
